Leadership, Communication, Motivation, And Applied Emotional Intelligence
Kate Kaynak, Ph.D.
CT/RI AWWA Annual Conference: Newport, RI

Successful leadership requires effective communication. Leaders who can communicate well will build staff morale and increase retention. They win more bids, and they delight their clients. They are assets on any team. And effective communication does not require "warm and fuzzy" understanding; it can be taught as a practical skillset.

This presentation will provide an overview of this practical skillset, including the Motivational Value System (MVS) and the basics of identifying and communicating with people in the ways that they understand and value. Leaders who master this skillset create buy-in for their ideas quickly and effectively. As Harry Truman once said, a leader "has the ability to get other people to do what they don't want to do, and like it." The power of persuasion is at the heart of great leadership, and attendees should leave with a stronger understanding of communicating to motivate.

The Next Steps to Leadership Success
Kate Kaynak, Ph.D.

ACEC/NY Winter Conference, Albany, NY

Effective leaders at engineering companies learn how to communicate well, manage their own emotions, motivate people, guide their teams through change, and deal with conflict. They make sure that clients, team-members, and shareholders are all getting what they need. Leaders who develop these interpersonal skills are better equipped to delight their clients, improve employee morale and retention, and create effective teams—all of which improve the company's performance and the bottom line. This presentation will provide an overview of the practical skillset that emerging leaders can choose to develop. These skills can be used for motivating, coaching, and mentoring staff members, building relationships with clients, and creating effective teams. People who choose to develop this skillset early in their careers have a competitive edge as they move up in their organizations.
